“HOLD EM FOR HUNGER “CHARITY POKER CANCELED
Posted in Nonclasificat on martie 24, 2008 by casinodiarioStudents at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill must be really pissed off! While their mates at Case Western Reserve University are playing poker for the sake of science, their less-cool school decides to cancel “Hold Em For Hunger” charity poker tournament due to some legal concerns. It seems that the tournament would break state regulations regarding gambling.
Apparently, this year’s Hold Em For Hunger charity event was scheduled to take place on April 20th. After receiving complaints from concerned individuals earlier in the week- could it be Patrick’s campaign?- lawyers for the school examined state laws pertaining to the event and determined that the event would “violate North Carolina’s gambling laws”. Did they missed the charity part? The bad news is that this sudden cancellation has left Nourish International, whose chapter at UNC sponsors the charity tournament without thousands of dollars.
According to pokernews.com, tournament organizer and director for HEFH, Graham Boone sid that: “The school was very remorseful about having to cancel the event. They didn’t want to shut us down, but we respect their decision and want the university to do things as legal as possible. The school was not the bad guy.”
It seems that the Nourish International has been helping to “bridge the gap between students and developing communities” since 2002 when they planned the first” Hold Em For Hunger” poker tournament. Over the last three years hundreds of students have taken part in prior events and this charity poker event was helping them to raise thousands of bucks. The students never minded about the fact that all proceeds collected from the $25 buy-in were going directly to Nourish International. All of them attending the event were to be provided with food, t-shirts, beverages, assorted free gifts. The whole event looked funkier than a just a typical poker tournament. Boone also added that the prizes which were to be given away at the tournament included an all-expense-paid European vacation provided by STA Travel. They also had a SYM Jet Euro Scooter with a custom UNC paint job, Tandem Sky Dives by Carolina Sky Sports, and a 30Gb iPod and an 8Gb iPod Touch, to give away.
Due to fantastic donations which help sponsor the event, Nourish International- a non-profit organization- has been able to provide these great prizes for the poker players. Not to mention the charity event organizers have been in touch with World Series of Poker World Champion Greg Raymer. The poker legend has offered to help the charity by autographing forty cases of poker chips planned on being used during the tournament. All the signed cases would have contained 500 poker chips. But, players interested in purchasing one should check out the deal on Hold Em For Hunger website. Notably, the charity estimated about $25,000 at this years’ event. If you’re interested in helping you can also make donations via Nourish International’s website.
Even if the “Hold Em For Hunger” annual tournament will not be taking place this year, Boone wants us to know that they’re not giving up. They will be filing for a government pardon for next year: The timing is too late now to do so!”
Hey guys, how about calling the super professor Charles Nesson ! I hear he makes a strong case for poker as an edifying game no matter what!
